Our Herd
- Our cattle live outside all year round and eat grass in the summer and hay in the winter.
- Their summer coats are starting to come through so they are currently moulting.
- Their coats are fluffy and warm in winter and a smooth conker red in summer
- The tips of their tails start to turn white when about a year old
- The steers go for beef at around 24 – 26 months old, so slow growing animals and full of flavour.
- The Red Poll, thrives in non-intensive, low input, natural farming environments, with a simple grass diet. They are well-adapted to life in our lush green countryside and ideal for grazing land managed to conserve wildlife habitats and encourage biodiversity.
- It is naturally polled (hornless). It thrives on low input management systems as it is an efficient converter of forage requiring little or no additional feed.
- Red Poll cattle resulted from the combination of the Norfolk and Suffolk cattle breeds. The Norfolk was a small, hardy, red and white horned breed known for the high quality of its beef. The Suffolk was a red, yellow, or brindle polled dairy breed.
- Meat from these grass fed cattle typically has higher levels of polyunsaturated, omega-3 fats than the more intensively reared, grain fed continental breeds. It also tastes exceedingly good with a rich, full flavour.
- Steers and young bulls finish well and produce outstanding quality meat.
- The breed is endangered and The Red Poll must become more widely recognised if it is to survive. Which is why we love to show our Red Poll cattle.
