The RSPCA’s “Freedom Foods” assurance scheme is based on five freedoms:

  1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
  2. Freedom from discomfort
  3. Freedom from pain , injury and disease
  4. Freedom to express normal behaviour
  5. Freedom from fear and distress.

We do not put nose rings on our pigs; they are free to root up the ground - sometimes it looks as if they are digging a tunnel to Australia! Pigs naturally root and forage for food.

They do not have their tails docked. This procedure has been done on commercial rearing and is to prevent tail biting. This occurs when pigs are bored or kept confined. Pigs allowed to roam at will, with the freedom to behave naturally, tend not to bite each other’s tails, they have more interesting things to do.

They do not have their teeth clipped or ground - a painful, stressful procedure.

We do not castrate the boar piglets because traditional breeds in a stress free environment do not suffer from boar taint.

Happy stress free pigs produce the best meat and we make sure that when the pigs go to slaughter it is as stress free as possible.
